Design Associate

Responsibilities of the position include support for the Landscape Architect in the following capacities:

  • Develop landscape design solutions from small residential to large scale commercial projects

  • Prepare budgets, estimates, and proposals

  • Assist in coordination with BLA Director of Operations

  • Perform client communications and customer service throughout the project

  • Create prints as required for client presentations

  • Work diligently to meet deadlines and client expectations

  • Perform administrative assignments, as needed


Essential competencies and characteristics:

  • Creative residential landscape design ability

  • Strong plant knowledge

  • Computer based design and graphic presentation skills

  • Landscape construction knowledge for all landscape services and elements.

  • Demonstrated ability to connect with people and successfully satisfy the needs of discriminating clients

  • Ability to work and learn in a fast-paced team environment while managing multiple client and project requirements


Requirements

  • Horticulture or Landscape Architecture degree (or pursuant therein)

  • Relevant experience in landscape design and construction

  • CAD, Adobe, Sketchup, and Microsoft Office computer application experience

  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record

  • Desirable experiences include: photography and graphic skills

Landscape Construction Crew Member

Responsibilities of the position include support for the Foreman in the following capacities:

  • Help build gardens and outdoor living spaces for residential and commercial clients by performing a variety of tasks, which may include any combination of the following:

  • Assist in the installation of such functional areas as patios, edging, walls, and walkways as well as water and other landscape features. Demolish and dispose of existing landscapes as necessary. Construct hardscapes and install lawn edging, plantings, low voltage lighting, and mulch.

  • Utilize and/or improvise on established techniques to produce the highest quality of work possible in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Read plans and select and use appropriate tools for required tasks; obtain a good understanding of job expectations and ask questions as needed to achieve daily tasks and goals.

  • Follow all policies and procedures related to work safety and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Maintain tools and equipment and report damage to property, equipment, or to self immediately.

  • Interact with clients, vendors, and the public in a professional and respectful manner, adhering at all times to BLA values and ethics in work and conduct.


Essential competencies and characteristics:

  • Ability to work well as part of a team and to accurately follow directions. Knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools to construct objects, structures, and buildings. Ability to use a variety of hand tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms and handsaws for simple tasks such as cutting wood, grooming gardens, and cleaning up leaves.

  • Skill in use of power tools such as circular or reciprocating saws, drills, sanders, weed trimmers, chainsaws, and leaf blowers.

  • Ability to operate and maneuver power equipment such as tillers, compactors, and trenchers.

  • Ability to keep to production schedules.

  • Dependability and good attention to detail and constant alertness are necessary for safety reasons and to avoid careless mistakes; Basic knowledge of landscape principles, horticulture practices and basic plant knowledge.


Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED preferred.

  • Minimum 2 years previous landscape construction experience.

  • Experience working with 2 cycle and gasoline-powered landscaping equipment.

  • Regular use of one's hands and arms in handling, installing, forming, positioning, and moving materials, or in manipulating things; requires considerable use of the arms and legs, such as in the physical handling of materials

  • Discipline and stamina to exert one's self physically over long periods of time

  • Must be able to move or handle materials generally weighing 50-100 pounds on a regular basis; Heavier lifting may occasionally be required.

  • Outside work with regular exposure to outside weather conditions.

Garden Maintenance Crew Member

Responsibilities of the position include support for the Master Gardener in the following capacities:

  • Learn general routes and locations of gardens.

  • Learn the gardens and their typical needs per visit.

  • Cultivate beds, prune plants, conduct cleanup, and care for container gardens per the direction of the Master Gardener.

  • Monitor watering needs and irrigation systems.

  • Notice dead plants and other issues in the landscape and report to Master Gardener.

  • Plant trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses, ground covers, and annuals.

  • Apply fertilizers, animal repellents, and safe insecticides as directed by the Master Gardener.

  • Assist with planting container gardens, pots, and window boxes.

  • Perform basic cleaning of outdoor living spaces and collect trash from gardens.

  • Occasional pressure washing, applying mulch and compost, and lawn restoration.

  • Ability to work well as part of a team and to accurately follow directions. Knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools to maintaining outdoor spaces. Ability to use a variety of hand tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms, and handsaws.

  • Ability to keep to production schedules.

  • Dependability and good attention to detail and constant alertness are necessary for safety reasons and to avoid careless mistakes;

  • Basic knowledge of landscape principles, horticulture practices and basic plant knowledge.


Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED preferred.

  • Previous landscape maintenance or gardening experience.

  • Understand general operation and safety of hand and power garden tools including: pruners, loppers, and sheers.

  • Regular use of one's hands and arms in handling, installing, forming, positioning, and moving materials, or in manipulating things; requires considerable use of the arms and legs, such as in the physical handling of materials

  • Ability to work independently or within a team structure that requires strong communication and willingness to put forth extra effort when needed.

  • Must be able to move or handle materials generally weighing 50-80 pounds on a regular basis; Heavier lifting may occasionally be required.

  • Outside work with regular exposure to outside weather conditions.
